Belgium has solidified its position as a leader in innovation, setting a new record for European patent applications. In 2024, Belgian companies and institutions filed 2,615 patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO), marking a 4.3% increase compared to the previous year. This growth stands out in a global context of stagnation, where the overall number of patent applications has remained relatively stable.
Belgium’s performance places it among the top countries for innovation, alongside Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark. These nations consistently rank high in patent activity, thanks to strong investments in research, technology, and industrial development.
