In September 1944 the 1st Polish Armoured Division, commanded by General Stanisław Maczek, liberated many Flemish towns and villages after four years of Nazi-occupation. Belgium has not forgotten the ultimate sacrifice made by the Polish soldiers for our freedom.
The 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Belgium has seen numerous commemorative and festive events being organised in Flanders. In Warsaw too, tribute will be paid to the valiant soldiers of the Maczek-Division, with a performance of the ODYSSEA cantata, a recent work of Belgian composer Henri Seroka, himself the son of a Maczek-veteran.
The composition is based on the story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, who wanders for many years before he is able to reach his homeland. The epic voyage of Odysseus is a fitting metaphor for the heroic exploits and the arduous journey of General Maczek and his soldiers during and after World War II.
