In Poland, Umicore has been producing emission-reducing catalysts in Nowa Ruda since 2015 and opened its cathode active materials plant for electric vehicles in Nysa in 2021.
Our Nysa facility plays a crucial role in the transition to clean mobility by supplying battery materials for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. The growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide, and to make Europe independent of external sources of raw materials means that electromobility is becoming increasingly important. Umicore has been developing technologies to support the transition to zero-emission transport for many years and bases its activities on a circular economy model.
Umicore's global innovation activities include a collaboration with US company Solid Power and the BMW Group on solid-state battery technology. As part of the project, BMW has started road testing the i7 model, equipped with solid-state cells with active cathode materials (CAM) developed jointly by Umicore and Solid Power. The new cells use a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid one, which increases safety, energy density and efficiency.
Beyond innovation and production, Umicore Nysa plays an active role in the local community and prioritizes the well-being of its employees.
